Maternity Unit Expansion

West Middlesex Hospital NHS Trust

Patient Experience

The end user was of extreme importance to the Trust and through a close working relationship, we were able to develop a design which achieved the home away from home feel the Trust had envisioned. Additionally, the use of appropriate external cladding created a sympathetic design which remained in keeping with the existing maternity unit.

Fast Track Maternity Facility

In just 24 weeks, more than 40 modules were delivered and incorporated into the existing maternity unit, increasing the facility size by 50%.

The maternity unit extension was designed with two key objectives in mind. To maximise the available space on site and to create a relaxing environment within the natural birthing centre for both mother and baby.

Expanding Existing building

ModuleCo Healthcare worked with the trust with one of the key objectives to maximise the space available onsite. This meant utilising pockets of space around the existing maternity building. In addition to the modular delivery rooms and theatre currently provided by MCH the trust requested a Natural Birthing Centre including a Special Care Baby Unit, Queen Mary Women’s Health Unit complete with consulting rooms and finally the Queen Mary Maternity unit for post-natal care.

Minimal Site Disruption

Modular offsite construction was ideal for this project, not only because of the strict timescales that needed to be hit. But also, due to the live hospital site environment and the nature of the building, a long construction process simply wouldn’t of been ideal for patient and staff experience within the hospital and in particular the maternity department.
