PKL Healthcare completed an "ultra fast-track" 56-bed ward facility for an NHS Foundation Trust in the North East procured through the OGC Buying.Solutions framework.
The Trust team embarked on an ambitious scheme in July of 2008, to provide large ward facilities to be up and running before Christmas, ready to cope with the winter influx of patients.
After a month long competition exercise involving two of the OGC Buying.Solutions suppliers, it was PKL Healthcare who could commit to the tight programme deadline. An order was placed by the Trust for the 2,071m2, 2-storey ward facility on 14th August.
The large ward facilities included a mixture of single en-suite and 4-bedded modular wards and included the associated ancillary and support areas.
The design of the ward determined a module size of 3.8m wide by 17.0m long, which were the largest built by PKL Healthcare to date. Whilst the units were being built and fitted out in the factory, the enabling contractor completed the groundwork's and built the steel podium required to position the ward at 1st and 2nd floor levels.
The units were delivered and installed over a week in early November and the remaining 7 weeks in the programme used to complete the installation on site.
The facility was successfully handed over to the client on 22nd December, on time and on budget after a construction programme of just 18-weeks.
