COVID-19 pressures set to stretch the UK’s healthcare capacity

Coronavirus: What we know so far

According to the latest figures on the gov website, more than 11,000 people in the UK have been diagnosed with COVID-19 and that number is rising fast.

The government is releasing new information and announcements daily to try and help slow the spread of the disease and offer support to businesses and communities.

The NHS has announced that Public Health England will undertake a considerable expansion of coronavirus testing facilities, in a bid to carry out as many tests, including at-home testing kits, as possible.

The spread of this virus is unprecedented and although the situation continues to change daily, there’s no doubt that this pandemic will put even more pressure on our frontline healthcare services in the weeks and months ahead.

What does this mean for the NHS?

Chancellor Rishi Sunak pledged a £30bn stimulus in the 2020 Budget to mitigate the fallout of the virus. Sunak also promised the government will provide "whatever extra resources our NHS needs to cope", while £5bn has been set aside to directly go towards combatting the epidemic.

These moves are encouraging and demonstrate the government’s commitment to supporting the British public during these uncertain times. However, the logistics surrounding the need for increased physical capacity to help our hospitals deal with the COVID-19 outbreak are yet to be clarified. More transparency is needed on how the NHS will be able to provide isolation wards, alongside their ongoing healthcare duties?

Increased visits to A&E, coupled with more genuine cases being diagnosed, is already placing a huge amount of strain on NHS services as the system struggles to provide adequate isolation space for affected patients.

While the Budget announcement also included a pledge to build 40 new hospitals, the fallout from coronavirus requires much quicker action. Ultimately, healthcare Trusts need to increase capacity quickly, and we’re already responding to calls to see how modular healthcare facilities could provide a quick and efficient solution.

Could modular facilities offer a solution to ease pressures?

Clinical modular facilities can help alleviate pressures, and our colleagues at ModuleCo have already started work on a number of rapidly deployed clinical facilities in response to client demand. But we’re also having conversations with clients, looking at how temporary standard wards and other in-patient facilities could relieve pressure in other departments, without the need for large capital expenditure, thanks to the option of flexible rental solutions.

The coronavirus is spreading fast and experts are warning that the situation isn’t likely to ease any time soon. By working together, we can combat this and all of us at both ModuleCo and ModuleCo Healthcare are ready to work with our partners to face the challenges that lie ahead.
