The benefits of hiring modular healthcare facilities in the current climate

When the COVID-19 pandemic came to the forefront of the global agenda back in March, almost every industry was thrown into chaos. This included NHS Trusts, who were forced to contend with rising COVID cases; a demanding task, given that our healthcare system is already battling budget cuts and increasing demands on services.

While the latest vaccine announcement is positive news, the NHS is still faced with restoring other services and tackling the backlog of operations and procedures that were postponed due to the virus. Using flexible hire solutions is a viable way for NHS Trusts to find new and fast ways of increasing services; particularly when considering new construction projects for 2021.

Construction work in the NHS can often prove problematic. Most Trusts simply do not have the available capital to pay for building work upfront and, even where finance options are available, it’s extremely difficult to deliver the works without causing chaos and disruption to hospital grounds and the day-to-day running of healthcare services.

Hiring: a short-term commitment for a long-term gain

Modular facilities can be made available on a hire basis, meaning they can be used as temporary or semi-permanent solutions. This method will be ideal in the coming months and years ahead when the UK and its health services will face uncertainty.

Modular buildings can offer long and short-term support and can be constructed quickly and efficiently while adhering to the Government’s current safety guidelines regarding social distancing. All of this makes hiring modular facilities a viable alternative to traditional projects, which require capital funding outright and need greater consideration from healthcare decision-makers sooner rather than later. ModuleCo Healthcare’s facilities can be hired for between two and 15 years, which allows the additional financial freedom that purchasing new facilities outright does not.

Cost-efficiency will be a strong consideration for those in the construction supply chain, who could look to increase the price of products or services to regain lost margins. Since leasing options offer more economic flexibility than their permanent construction counterparts, now is the perfect time for healthcare decision-makers to test the waters with these hire agreements.

Bespoke and sustainable designs

As part of our collaborative working approach, we can sit down with a new client to confirm budget requirements and individual needs from the outset. This is a key part of our service offering, allowing us to work backwards from a budget to ensure the costs of a facility are combined to meet the exact requirements of the project. This ability to create bespoke designs helps to ensure NHS Trusts gets exactly what they need for the budgets they have.

It’s no secret that traditional construction is also considered to have a negative environmental impact and the sector is under increasing pressure to build in a more environmentally friendly way. Generally, offsite construction methods are an ecological improvement because the resulting facility is reusable and relocatable.

For example, our facilities can be re-sited to reflect changing demands. Once the modules have served a purpose for one client, they can be meticulously refurbished and re-purposed for another client, making them a truly sustainable product.

What next?

The current climate shows that, despite the abundance of changes to our ways of working, off-site construction continues to be a robust and resilient way of building. Moreover, flexible hire agreements are becoming more desirable due to a lack of certainty and the ever-changing needs of NHS Trusts.

Buildings like ours can be used for permanent or shorter-term solutions and can be considered ‘futureproof’ investments, meaning they can be remodelled or reutilised in the future, long after the COVID-19 epidemic draws to a close. They can be available for hire immediately with no capital outlay and can be manufactured, installed and ready for use in a matter of weeks, with minimal works required on site. All of this is very attractive in the current climate and NHS Trusts should consider investing in these flexible products.
