ModuleCo Healthcare looks back on a challenging yet incredibly rewarding year

It’s safe to say that 2020 has been a year of unexpected challenges, with everybody being forced to adapt to new ways of working and thinking. It’s been no exception for us here at ModuleCo Healthcare, with the ramifications of the pandemic impacting the way we operate.

Nevertheless, the last twelve months have been a time of progress and excitement, and our company has witnessed some wonderful highlights. From strategic appointments to completed projects and industry award wins, 2020 has definitely had its positive moments. As we countdown to the end of the year, we wanted to share a round-up of some of our annual highlights.

Investing in our business development

Back in April, we announced the appointment of our new business development manager, Richard Henry, who played an imperative role in helping the team respond to the rising demand from NHS Trusts for the hiring of modular healthcare facilities.

Richard joined us with 30 years of experience working in business strategy and development. He plays a key role in supporting our clients with the supply and maintenance of wards, theatres and other clinical facilities that we provide.

Continued project success

It’s also been a progressive year for our project work, which will see us complete the second phase of a flagship scheme as well as an acute medical unit and a brand new sterile services department.

In January, we successfully handed over a new modular Acute Medical Unit at Maidstone Hospital in Kent. The facility consists of 30 modules and provided five, four-bedroom bay wards, as well as two single en-suite rooms, a three-bay treatment room and general support accommodation associated with this type of facility.

July saw us deliver a new, state-of-the-art sterile services department at Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Aylesbury, for Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust. We oversaw the entire project from order to handover, including the planning process, demolition of the existing building and the associated foundation works, all to ensure the modules could be safely installed on site.

This project was a collaboration with our manufacturing partner, ModuleCo, and MMM Medical, who supplied the sterilisation equipment for the new facility. This fantastic project created a much needed new revenue stream for the NHS Trust and demonstrated the importance of teamwork. These collaborative partnerships are going to be essential in coming years and we’re thrilled to be leading the way with these key relationships.

Our work at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital has been ongoing since September 2019. Phase one was finished in December 2019 and we’re thrilled to announce that the second phase of this award-winning scheme is currently being finalised and will be handed over before Christmas. The full complex will provide four new operating theatres, a 6-bed recovery suite and a 20-bed ward, which will enable the hospital to treat an additional 2,500 local patients each year.

The Trust also agreed on a Managed Service Agreement (MSA) with us for an initial 10 years, meaning there was just a singular monthly fee that covered the rental price of the facility, enabling works, ongoing maintenance costs and the leasing of equipment for both the theatres and wards. This helped to ensure the hospital’s staff and patients could benefit from our facilities immediately, up until at least 2030. This progressive way of financing also eradicated the need for upfront capital and allows the Trust to help pay for the facility through additional revenue streams generated by the project.

Awards success

At MCH, we always aim to deliver projects that are innovative and state-of-the-art, but ROH was an extraordinary project for us. It was fantastic to work on a scheme that delivered such strong social value through the creation of new jobs while building new and improved environments for NHS staff and patients at the hospital.

It’s also brilliant that the scheme was recognised publically, picking up a trio of industry award shortlists. The advanced operating theatre and ward complex was shortlisted for Healthcare Project of the Year at the Offsite Awards, Best Modular Project at the Building Better Healthcare Awards and Offsite Project of the Year at the Building Awards. Winning the latter in November 2020 has been among the biggest company highlights this year!

While the world might be glad to see the back of 2020, the MCH team continue to be extremely grateful for the successes and lessons that the year has brought us, and are particularly proud to have worked alongside the NHS and our amazing key workers this year. We can’t wait to see what’s next for us in 2021 – make sure you’re following us on LinkedIn and Twitter to stay up to date on all our work.
